In ultrasonic testing (UT),very short ultrasonic pulse-waves with center frequencies ranging from 0.1-15MHz and occasionally up to 50 MHz are launched into materials to detectinternal flaws or to characterize materials. A common example is ultrasonicthickness measurement, which tests the thickness of the test object, forexample, to monitor pipework corrosion.
Ultrasonic testing is oftenperformed on steel and other metals and alloys, though it can also be used onconcrete, wood and composites, albeit with less resolution. It is a form ofnon-destructive testing used in many industries including aerospace, automotiveand other transportation sectors.
In pulse-echo mode, thetransducer performs both the sending and the receiving of the pulsed waves asthe "sound" is reflected back to the device. Reflected ultrasoundcomes from an interface, such as the back wall of the object or from animperfection within the object. The diagnostic machine displays these resultsin the form of a signal with an amplitude representing the intensity of thereflection and the distance, representing the arrival time of the reflection.
1.High penetrating power, which allows the detection of flaws deep in the part.
2.High sensitivity, permitting the detection of extremely small flaws.
3.Greater accuracy than other nondestructive methods in determining the depth ofinternal flaws and the thickness of parts with parallel surfaces.
4.Some capability of estimating the size, orientation, shape and nature ofdefects.
5.Non hazardous to operations or to nearby personnel and has no effect onequipment and materials in the vicinity.
6.Capable of portable or highly automated operation.
7.It is sensitive to both surface and subsurface discontinuities.
8.Only single-sided access is needed when the pulse-echo technique is used.
9.Minimal part preparation is required.
10.Electronic equipment provides instantaneous results.
11.Detailed images can be produced with automated systems.
12. It has other uses, such as thicknessmeasurement, in addition to flaw detection.
