About Oxide Scale Measurement of for boiler tubes

Asignificant limiting factor that affects tube life in fossil fired steamboilers is the growth of iron oxide scale (magnetite) on the inside and outsidetube surfaces. The oxide scale, which forms under long term exposure to veryhigh temperatures, acts as a thermal insulator. While external scale limitsheat transmission into the tube and reduces boiler efficiency, internal scalebuildup represents a potentially more serious problem. The insulating effect ofinternal scale limits heat transmission into the water vapor inside the tube, which in turn causes chronic overheating of the tube wall and promotesaccelerated metallurgical failure. Non Destructive measurement of internaloxide scale thickness is of major interest in the power generation industry andother users of fossil fuel steam boilers, since scale thickness may be used topredict remaining tube life. While very high frequency ultrasonic gagingtechniques have been available for this measurement for a number of years, theyinvolved use of cumbersome, expensive pulser/receiver and oscilloscope systems.Recent advances in instrumentation technology have made available small,hand-held ultrasonic gages with software optimized for measurement of internalscale and advanced data logging capability. Additionally, the use of normalincidence shear wave transducers improves resolution of thin scale layers, permitting measurement of scale buildup down to approximately 0.125 mm withhand-held equipment. ITE has uses Olympus 38 DL plus with suitable probes fortesting of tubes for deposition of oxide scales. We have been providing theseservices for more than a decade and have various customers across the countryin Power Sector who regularly use our services.

The device also features automatic zero and span calibration, ensuring reliable and reproducible results even in challenging industrial conditions.

Versatile and Reliable in Tough Environments

The devices robust build, IP54 protection, and shockproof carry case enhance its durability for industrial settings. With an operating temperature range of 050C and measurement capability up to 600C, it endures in high-heat environments common in boiler operations. Its portable form factor and moisture resistance ensure seamless field usage.

Intuitive Interface and Flexible Data Management

The backlit digital LCD display provides clear readouts in low-light situations, while the memory can store up to 1,000 readings. USB and serial communication (RS232/RS485) streamline data transfer and documentation. The visual and audible alarms quickly notify inspectors when oxide scale thickness exceeds preset limits, boosting safety and maintenance efficiency.

FAQs of Oxide Scale Measurement of for boiler tubes:

Q: How does the oxide scale measurement device determine oxide layer thickness on boiler tubes?

A: The device utilizes either magnetic induction or eddy current probes to accurately measure the thickness of oxide scales on boiler tubes. It provides precise, non-destructive measurement across a range of tube diameters, ensuring minimal operational interruptions.

Q: What calibration process is used to ensure measurement accuracy?

A: The instrument is equipped with automatic zero and span calibration using reference foils. This process ensures repeatable and dependable readings, maintaining the stated accuracy of 0.01 mm even in demanding field conditions.

Q: When should oxide scale thickness be measured on boiler tubes?

A: Oxide scale thickness should be monitored during routine maintenance intervals, before scheduled shutdowns, or whenever there is a potential risk of tube degradation. Regular measurement helps prevent overheating and tube failure.

Q: Where is this measurement system primarily utilized?

A: This system is predominantly used on-site in thermal power plants, refineries, and industrial boiler facilities across India. Its design is tailored for field use on boiler tubes operating in harsh environments.

Q: What are the benefits of the internal memory and digital interface features?

A: The internal memory can store up to 1,000 readings, enabling users to document and compare historical data without the risk of loss. Digital USB and RS232/RS485 interfaces allow quick data transfer to computers for analysis and archival purposes.

Q: What steps are involved in using this device for oxide scale measurement?

A: First, the device undergoes automatic zero and span calibration with supplied reference foils. The operator then selects the appropriate probe, positions it on the tube surface, and initiates a measurementresults are displayed instantly. If oxide scale exceeds preset limits, alarms alert the user for timely decision-making.

Q: What advantages does this device offer regarding protection, usage conditions, and portability?

A: With IP54-rated protection, a shockproof carry case, and construction from high-grade stainless steel and alloys, the device is suitable for industrial environments. Its battery and AC operation, as well as lightweight design, make it highly portable and versatile for various on-site inspections.
